This was my second natural childbirth. I chose to forego the meds (except for ibuprofen for the next three days) simply because I wanted to avoid the side effects that occurred with my first three children. I experienced hallucinations from one of the medications. I had a spinal headache from the epidural with my second child. Plus the meds left both the baby and me sluggish for a day or so after birth. Finally, I have Mitral Valve Prolapse, and the medications increased the MVP symptoms during my recovery period. I really didn’t need that during a time when my hormones were trying to adjust anyway.
Having experienced childbirth both ways, I am definitely in favor of going natural. I felt so much better immediately after the baby was born. I was alert, the baby was alert, and I recovered much quicker.
This is my story and my experience. That’s all it is. It definitely doesn’t make me superwoman. I probably would have never considered this option had I not experienced the side effects the first three times. If you are contemplating natural childbirth, I say go for it. However, if your experience turns out different or not as planned, that’s perfectly fine too. Every birth is different. Birth is a miracle no matter how you experience it!
