If you've known me for just a short amount of time, you'll soon figure out that I like to have a plan for just about everything. My children and I have a daily schedule we follow. We have chores divided up among family members. My husband and I have a budget for our finances. I make lessons plans for our homeschooling. Sometimes I wonder if all this planning is overkill, but for me, having a plan is essential to working towards a goal.
Actually, planning is biblical. However, we must always remember that God sometimes puts kinks in our plans, and His plan should always trump ours. Here are some quick tips and some scripture from the book of Proverbs to keep in mind anytime we are planning:
1. Seek Counsel
"Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established." (Proverbs 15:22)
"Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days." (Proverbs 19:20)
2. Pray for God's Direction
"All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirits. Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established." (Proverbs 16:2,3)
"A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)
"There are many plans in a man's heart, nevertheless, the Lord's counsel - that will stand." (Proverbs 19:21)
3. Keep a Long Term Focus
"The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty." (Proverbs 21:5)
So, the next time you are planning something major or something as simple as a "To-Do List" for the day, remember to include God. Your plans might just work out better if you do!
